Course Description:
This forty-hour course has been developed with information gathered over decades of
experience in School-Based Policing. The concept of school resource officer is best described
as a triad concept: teacher, counselor, and law enforcement officer. This course will
concentrate on this triad and teach skills necessary to be successful on any campus.
Completion of this course has proven to be invaluable to existing school-based law
enforcement officers and programs. There will be a course examination and at least one
graded practical exercise performed by each student.
Who Should Attend?
Any School-Based Law Enforcement Officer/Deputy, School Liaison Officer, School
Resource Officer, Law Enforcement Supervisor, et. al.
Core Topics:
The History of School Based Policing, School Violence, Counseling and Interview
Techniques, Involvement in Student Activities, Classroom Strategies for Officers, Adolescent
Stress and Suicide, Crisis Planning and Management, and Legal Aspects of School Based
Policing Programs.
About Your Instructor:
Shaun Shepherd retired from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in Chattanooga,
Tennessee after 35 years of service. He most recently served as the Deputy Chief of
Corrections. He has served as the Youth & Community Division Commander, which
includes administrating the SRO Division, Homeland Security and Community Awareness.
He served six years as the SRO at Chattanooga Central High School and worked for four
years as a team supervisor within Patrol Division before working 14 years as the division
administrator for SRO. Shaun has lead instruction with Corbin & Associates, Inc. in Basic
and Advanced classes, and Supervision and Management of School Based-Policing
Programs. Shaun has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University
of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Date, Location, & Cost:
Class will be held approx. early June 2025, 8 AM-5 PM. Hosted by New Mexico LEA,
Classroom 7 4491 Cerrillos, Santa Fe, NM 87507. The course includes all materials, flash
drive, and certificate of completion. Attendees should have computer/tablet access for an in-class group assignment. This class is also free of charge.
